Recorded in California (at Shangri-La studios no less)during his convalescence following a serious bike accident, Shangri-La is the product of an artist who continues to soak-up the rich musical heritage of both sides of the Atlantic and crafted it into something contemporary and special.
The former Dire Straits main man is in reflective mood this time, recounting porch-style tales and musical anecdotes from everywhere between the Tyne and the Delta. Blues remains Knopfler's key influence with tracks such as Boom, Like That and the Hammond-drenched title track confirming the great man's distinctive guitar work and husky vocal style are both still present.
A handful of A-list guest performances bring a sense of occasion to the proceedings with pedal steel performances from Paul Franklin and long time cohort Richard Bennett particularly on the toasty warm All That Matters.
Music nerds might like to note that Mark used his beloved Ramirez spectrum guitar on the suitably exotic Postcards From Paraguay.
Guitar Information:
Mark's Strat guitar features a '57 Strat guitar ash body and a vintage tinted '62 "C"-shape maple neck with a rosewood fingerboard. His unmistakable tone comes from three Texas Special single-coil pickups and a five-way switch. Fender / Gotoh vintage tuners and an American vintage tremolo system round out this sultan of swing. |
